Signs of vitamin B12 deficiency are ignored

1. Fatigue and weakness

Fatigue and weakness are among the earliest and most common signs of vitamin B12 deficiency. Since B12 is essential for red blood cell production, a deficiency reduces the number of healthy red blood cells needed to transport oxygen throughout the body. This oxygen shortage can leave you feeling unusually tired, even after adequate rest.

In practice, this fatigue may not improve with sleep and can interfere with daily activities. Muscle weakness may also occur, making routine tasks feel more strenuous. If fatigue is persistent and unexplained, testing vitamin B12 levels can help identify whether a deficiency is the cause.

Treatment typically involves vitamin B12 supplementation, which can reverse fatigue if started early. Ignoring this symptom can lead to worsening anemia and more severe complications.

2. Pale or yellowish skin

Vitamin B12 deficiency often causes anemia, which can manifest as pale or yellowish skin. The paleness results from a lack of healthy red blood cells, reducing blood flow and oxygen delivery to tissues. In some cases, the skin may take on a subtle yellow tint, known as mild jaundice, due to increased breakdown of defective red blood cells.

This symptom can be overlooked or misattributed to other causes such as liver problems. However, recognizing pale or sallow skin alongside other signs like fatigue should prompt a healthcare provider to evaluate for B12 deficiency anemia.

Physical examination may reveal additional signs such as pale mucous membranes or a rapid heartbeat related to anemia severity.
